Spectra 3 - Contact 2020

Presented in the 2020 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival as part of Gallery 44's group show Spectra 3, at Artscape Youngspace.

“A change has been proposed for this site”

This collection explores the rapidly changing personalities of Toronto in a period of growing civic awareness. The last few years have been the first in which it could be heard said that Toronto is experiencing a “moment”, a cultural crystallization that had been in the making, journeying through the influences of immigration, the blossoming of cultural institutions, and impact of world events that leave it in a uniquely vibrant and progressive role. A city that has not known decline from the vertigo of a historic peak, just emerging aware of its prominence – what ideas will it produce?

Meanwhile, in this place where everything is opening, turning over and renovating, there is injustice and inequality. Expressing a hope for a compassionate city to emerge from the dress rehearsal, the collection invites viewers to connect with the context of local places, and to create the ideas that only large diverse cities in such an episode in their history can discover.
