Neither in the sky nor on the ground
Contact Photography Festival 2023
You’ve just arrived at a new school again. You remember (or maybe you don’t) seeing your language on the street knowing it wasn’t make-believe. You don’t want to tell the other kids about that place – they’ve seen its name on the news, and not the way you’d want them to. You remember the baggage empty and full and empty and full, landing under this strange scary sky that first time, the First Annual Misunderstanding Of The Function Of Backyards, The Day You Erased The Best Letters To Help Them Say Your Name. You’ll remember feeling confused, the aggressive questions in class ‘what’s your favourite season or sport’, the balloons somebody tied to the trees in your park so they don’t cut them down. You draw an imaginary land. You colour it in, like a flag , you give it a name.
